Levulan Photodynamic Therapy

Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is the latest advance in acne and aging skin therapy. Levulan PDT is one of the most popular acne treatments for men and women of all ages at Hogue Cosmetic Surgery. Levulan Photodynamic acne treatments consist of applying a photosensitizing agent known as Levulan (5-aminolevulinic acid), which is then activated with blue light. Significant improvement of moderate to severe cystic acne is possible with Levulan PDT.

Levulan PDT treats acne by inactivating the bacteria that trigger acne, exfoliating the skin to unclog pores, and shutting down the sebaceous glands in the skin. Sebaceous glands are the root causes of the formation of acne so Levulan PDT can even have a long-lasting effect on severe acne. Levulan PDT even works for patients who haven’t had success with Accutane. Accutane also targets the sebaceous glands but with toxic side effects. Levulan PDT is a much safer alternative to Accutane.

After one to two hours following application, the Levulan will be activated with IPL (intense pulsed light) and/or blue-light. An anesthetic topical cream may be applied prior to light exposure. You will be given special goggles to wear that will protect your eyes during the treatment. You may feel stinging, tingling, prickling, or burning of the lesions during treatment, but this should go away once the procedure is finished.

Stay out of the direct sunlight as much as possible for 48 hours following treatment. Your skin will probably appear red and swollen for three to seven days following treatment. There may be some crusting of the treatment area as well. You may experience discomfort during the healing process, but no significant pain should be felt. There may be some residual redness after one week, but you can cover it up using makeup.
