Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing
Overview
Our skin is our largest organ. It protects our bodies from developing infections and shields us from harmful substances. However, as we age, the effects that the sun, wind, time, and hormones have on our skin becomes apparent.
At first, fine lines form around our eyes and lips. Then, as the collagen beneath our skin deteriorates, deeper creases begin to appear. Pigment discolorations, acne scarring, and other surface irregularities may also appear.
In the past, dermabrasion and chemical peels were the skin resurfacing treatments of choice for reducing the signs of aging skin. During dermabrasion, layers of the skin are actually sanded away while during chemical peels, layers of skin are burned away using an acid solution.
The Erbium Laser
The Erbium laser is the latest advancement in the treatment of aging and sun-damaged skin. The Erbium laser restores soft, smooth, and youthful looking skin more safely, more accurately, and less painfully than chemical peels or dermabrasion. Most patients can return home on the same day that they receive Erbium laser skin resurfacing treatment.
Erbium laser skin resurfacing is a procedure that is specifically designed to remove superficial and moderate wrinkles from the face. According to recent studies, the Erbium laser stimulates the production of collagen, which tightens and smoothes the skin. The Erbium laser does not heat and burn skin tissue surrounding the treatment area like other lasers used for resurfacing. As such, your doctor can gently and comfortably vaporize damaged skin cells layer by layer. Most patients only require a local or topical anesthetic.
Recovery
There is minimal post-operative redness and swelling following treatment with the cool Erbium laser. The healing process is also more rapid than that of other skin resurfacing methods. The majority of patients who receive Erbium laser treatment are fully recovered and able to resume normal activities within seven to ten days of treatment.
For the first few days following the procedure, ointment is applied to treatment areas in order to keep them moist. Sunblock should be applied before going out into the sun for the first week following the procedure, and patients should refrain from wearing makeup for one week following the procedure. Over the next few weeks following treatment, new, pink skin will fade into a normal tone and look softer, smoother, and younger. Patients at Hogue Cosmetic Surgery always tell us how much younger they feel after Erbium laser treatment.
