Arm Pit (Armpit) Sweating Treatment

Overview

Excessive armpit sweating, also known as axillary hyperhidrosis, is caused by over-active sweat glands or overstimulation of the sympathetic nervous system. The consumption of specific foods, stress, anxiety, and emotional stimuli can all contribute to the problem.

Excessive armpit sweating is an embarrassing condition that can lead to emotional stress and social isolation. Treatments that alleviate excessive armpit sweating include surgery, Botox injections, oral medications, and antiperspirants.

Surgery Treatment

Some patients are able to successfully treat excessive armpit sweating with surgery. However, it’s important to note that surgery does not always provide a 100% solution to armpit sweating.

The two main types of surgical procedures used to treat excessive armpit sweating consist of an excision of the skin in the armpit area and a newer procedure known as axillary suction curettage, which removes sweat glands from the deep layer of the skin. The advantages of the latter procedure include smaller incisions, faster recovery, and the preservation of the areas where hair grows. The success rate for axillary suction curettage is about 80%. Surgical removal of skin from the armpit can be dramatically effective but leaves scarring so it is rarely practiced today.

Botox Treatment

Botox injections block the release of the chemicals that are responsible for stimulating sweat glands. Botox injections must be repeated approximately every six months or so to maintain effect. The results of Botox treatment are apparent within two days.

Oral Medications

Oral anticholinergic medications such as glycopyrrolate reduce sweating, but they are not commonly prescribed to treat excessive armpit sweating because they cause a number of side effects, including blurred vision, insomnia, and dry mouth.

Antiperspirants

20% aluminum chloride is a prescription-strength antiperspirant that you can try if ordinary antiperspirants don’t do the trick. Make sure your skin is absolutely dry before applying aluminum chloride to your underarms because otherwise it can produce a harsh chemical reaction that irritates your skin. Aluminum chloride is also known to damage clothing. Brand names of aluminum chloride include Drichlor, Odaban, and Perspirex.
